What to Do When Your Teen Has Been in an Accident

Posted on 5th December 2018 by RadiateWP in Auto Accident

“2,333 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 235,845 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes” This source and more facts can be found on their Teen Drivers Factsheet. Help by Being Prepared Equip your child to understand the steps to take in the case of an accident including:

  • Never leaving the scene of an accident unless instructed to do so by police
  • Move out of the way of traffic if possible – use safety cones or flares if needed
  • Call 911 immediately, especially in the case of injuries
  • Document the accident, such as writing down what happened and taking pictures
  • Exchange contact information with the other driver, including insurance information
Keep a safety/tool kit in the trunk of your teen’s vehicle, and educate them on the proper procedures for changing a tire, checking engine fluids, obeying traffic signs, and respecting other drivers. Make sure your child is aware of the safest places to pull off the road in case of an emergency, and teach them practical ways to call for/ go get help if necessary. These skills could save your teenager’s life. Make sure your child knows who to contact and how to contact them in the case of an emergency, and that their insurance and registration is up to date. As the parent of a new driver, it is also wise to keep yourself abreast of any and all necessary information regarding updated traffic laws, changes to road safety measures, car regulations, and the like. Having a trustworthy lawyer in case of an accident is another great way to take preventative measures to guard against the potentially life-changing effects of a car wreck.
