Steps To Take Following a Motorcycle Accident

Posted on 28th May 2015 by RadiateWP in Motorcycle Accidents

Stop Immediately
No matter how minor the accident may be, stop immediately, exchange information, identify all persons involved and contact law enforcement. You will want to deal with any injuries right away, or you may be faced with unfortunate consequences without recourse.
Assist the Injured and Assess Your Own Injuries
Your first duty after stopping your bike is to assist any and all other injured persons. If necessary, call an ambulance immediately, and try to make the other person comfortable. Do not move them unless you know exactly what you are doing and are trained in medical care, however. It’s also just as important to get an assessment and receive treatment for your own injuries, which you should never dismiss as minor. Doing so may have long-term physical and monetary consequences. You must also understand that everyone involved in an accident is potentially liable – including pedestrians, authorities who fail to keep the scene safe for travel, as well as other factors – a so gather as much information as you can.
Know Your Rights and Responsibilities
When you are involved in a motorcycle accident, you need to know your rights and responsibilities. It is imperative to take action and get the compensation you deserve in order to get medical care and cover the expenses for pain, lost wages, and any other factors. Be sure to get legal advice to preserve your rights. Experienced attorneys will know how to make the best use of police reports, weather reports, any notes you took, and other witness statements to piece together an accurate account of the accident resulting in injury.
Another tool that will assist in your case is the use of photographs. Be sure to take photos of the scene of the accident, photos of any injuries, and photos of any damage to your motorcycle. Make use of your cell phone as you can record witness statements, video the scene of the accident, and record any thoughts or observations as they occur. It may also be helpful to keep a diary that documents any lost wages or lost time from work with supporting statements from supervisors. Together with your attorney, this can help you bring action quickly and get the situation resolved.
