Auto makers are going to battle with the Federal government over smartphone and portable GPS makers to determine what technology-related driver distractions should be covered. The transportation department is currently conducting hearings to establish new guidelines regarding distracted driving devices. GPS devices that drivers can put in anywhere they want can be used freely while driving, while factory installed navigation systems would have strict limitations under the new proposed guidelines. The automobile manufacturers are arguing that mobile devices need to be addressed at the same time. Currently, more than 25 states have laws against texting while driving. Some of the restrictions being proposed by the transportation department include no more than 10 two second glances at dashboard tests. ]]>
